10 years! It has now been 10 years since this crazy adventure began. Through many challenges, small victories and great successes, our goal has always been to help online retailers succeed in an ever-changing ecosystem. Today, this challenge has been met, and we’re celebrating an important milestone… our 10th anniversary! We’ve met wonderful people throughout these years, from our very first customers and employees to the latest members who have joined the adventure. And that’s not to mention the mentors and investors who have helped to make our vision a reality over the years.
A lot has happened in 10 years. Awards have been received, funds have been raised, new markets have been conquered, and our platform and our workforce have grown. To mark the occasion, I’d like to share 10 highlights from our story so far, which is far from over…
In an industry where responsiveness and up-to-date information are key, it was essential to develop a powerful tool capable of indexing as much data as possible every day. In the year Lengow was created, 1 million products were indexed within our platform. In 2018, this figure rose to 870 billion, with 87,000 feeds indexed every day – we want this figure to keep rising in the coming years!
In 2010, we were the first prize winner at the “Startup Academy”. This was our first recognition from the ecosystem, which helped spark our desire to take up new challenges and to make Lengow grow both in France and in new markets.
This is the amount raised following our first fundraising campaign in 2011, where Alven Capital helped to finance our international expansion. This marks an important milestone in the Lengow story and in our quest to become a global market leader.
To support the success of our international expansion, we opened our Paris office in 2012 and recruited employees from all over Europe. We received the International Prize that same year at the E-commerce Awards organized by the E-commerce Paris show. By the end of 2019, half of our business will be international.
In 2013 we had the idea to create Lengow Day, an annual event bringing together the entire e-commerce industry to be inspired by the latest market trends and to discuss with the sector’s experts. Internationalisation is part of our DNA, and while Lengow Day has evolved over the years, its objective remains the same: to allow the European e-commerce ecosystem to come together. 2019’s edition will take place on 1st October, and will bring together as many major marketing channels as possible, which is unique in Europe.
In 2016, we also launched Lengow Connect, micro-format “Lengow Days” with the idea to develop local e-commerce ecosystems. Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, Shanghai, Shenzhen, London… every year new destinations are added to the list, so we can meet our customers and prospective customers to learn about their expectations and help with their internationalization strategy.
2014 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Lengow’s history: China. China is home to the world’s largest e-commerce market and is a country we relied on early on because we believe that it can be a major business accelerator for our merchants. Today, we help European brands to sell in China, and we allow many Chinese merchants to establish themselves on European marketplaces.
With the strength of our success and, above all, our ongoing ambition, we wanted to take a step forward and significantly accelerate our activity. The idea was to bring a new innovative and efficient product to the market, which would require significant R&D resources. We also wanted to strengthen our commercial position in different geographical areas of the world. After many months of work by all our teams, we raised 10 million euros in 2015. On this occasion, Bpifrance and Serena acquired a stake in Lengow to help us pursue our international expansion and also to develop our platform.
As a result of this fundraising, we opened our Munich office at the end of 2016. It was important for us to be as close as possible to our German customers but also to develop our reputation in this country where competition is strong. Three years after our physical arrival in the German market, we had the pleasure of winning the “International E-commerce Development Solution” award at the E-commerce Berlin Expo, which illustrates the position we have taken in this key market in Europe, as well as the growing brand image we have built over the years.
This great adventure would not be the same without our employees in Nantes, Paris and Munich. Thank you to all of the team for their ideas, involvement and loyalty over the years. We’ve brought together a team that thinks and acts every day for one single objective: to help our merchants. We’ve met some extraordinary people over the years, and we are proud of their individual journies and, above all, really grateful for their involvement.
Today, Lengow continues to grow. We are pleased to support each of our 4,600 brands and distributors (10 years ago this number was a mere 30!) in their e-commerce development on 1,600 marketing channels around the world.
As we improve our platform, expand into international markets and grow, our ambition is to make Lengow the key platform to help each brand and retailer automate their e-commerce activity.
At Lengow, we’re celebrating our first 10 years today, but we’re already focusing on the next 10 years and what else we can bring to a constantly evolving market.
Our ambition remains the same, thanks to the support of many partners and customers, and promises to bring a new vision that could shake up the e-commerce market.
The best is yet to come…
